FIRST TRIP! COPENHAGEN - thank you weather gods! it was suppose to rain the entire weekend, but weather gods blessed us with a few short rainfalls.
Flew to CPH after work on Friday. The flight was about an hour long and once we landed, we headed straight to the subway; no customs, no baggage, nothing!! Quickest airport exit ever!! We got to our place around 11, decided to grab a few beers from the store and head out the bars. We stayed in Indre By or Inner city, which was pretty much the core/downtown area of Copenhagen and the bars were all in walking distance. We met these Amuricans who were there for an exchange program like everyone else in Europe. First impressions of night life: drinks cost more, and people start at around 11pm vs. the 2/3am in Berlin... Woke up next morning and started our exploring pretty early. Our place was very central and walking distance from most of the palaces and other tourist attractions so we decided to get that out of the way before we got out ugly, fruitbasket-ass bikes to go a bit further.
Frederik's Church, Amalienborg and Nyhavn
Frederik's Church
We saw the church the previous night on our walk to our place but we didn't know what it was until our host told us. Basically, a giant church made of marble. It was very nice at night when the lights lit up but too bad it was being repaired :(
Amalienborg was some palace of some sort. It was nice to see, but it was just buildings, nothing really special.
Nyhavn
And Nyhavn, this is probably one of most looked up images for Copenhagen (for me atleast). Basically, just a bunch of colourful, old-ish looking buildings by the harbour. Sadly, I'm still not good w/ my camera or else the pics would've been nicer :(
Church of Our Saviour
long way up...
So this was a little church in Christianshavn that had a spectacular outdoor spiral staircase at the very top that allowed you to see all of CPH from above. We got there at around 11 and we were on of the first few.
the view...
Andrey in action. So proud of this pic I took :')
Good thing we came early because the stairs up was extremely narrow. The first set of flights wasn't bad, but once we got up higher, it suddenly became super tiny and super steep. Like, one person at a time, no wide waisted people would fit narrow. It was hard for me to navigate w/ my backpack on. In fact, I don't think the Toronto-me would've fit through the doors at the top to get to the spiral staircase outside.. Once you got outside though, the view made the struggles and pain of those stairs worth it.
the 6ix.
We stayed outside for over an hour just taking pictures/learning to use my camera and taking in the sight. It was really, really, really, über nice. When we were coming down, people were standing there waiting for people to come down so they can get up. This was probably my favourite part of the trip. I'm a sucker for nice views.
Christiania - The Green Light District
This is the "hippie" area or the "Green Light District"of CPH. Weed was sold in little tents here to anyone and there were also a few cafes. As far as I know, it's illegal in Denmark but police, aren't really strict on it. Like this place could be raided and everyone would be busted. They did have a pretty serious system though. Signs EVERYWHERE saying no pictures and they had people on every corner patrolling. I even got yelled at for just having my camera out.
Tivoli Gardens
gate to Tivoli
We also did go to Rosenborg Castle, but couldn't get any pictures since there was a huge stage being setup right outside and we didn't want to pay to go inside. We cheap like that. And museums don't really interest me. So we decided to head to Tivoli Gardens!
trying to create that cloudy water effect...#FAIL
Soon as we got there, we both knew we'd be taking a lot of pictures here. The place just had so many nice things and I needed to learn how to use my camera.... still..
one of the roller coasters at night.
Originally I didn't plan on going on any of the rides but we figured we still had the entire day so we got multi-ride passes and went on every ride. Roller coasters don't have the same kick there :(
We decided to stay till after sunset to get some nice pics. This is where I got a real good Photography 101 lesson from my coworker. Taking those nice pics you see on google is REALLLY hard. I tried a gazillion times to get a really nice picture of the lights but nothing I took compares :(
The Final Night
into the dark.
After a good 12 hours out, we headed back to return our bikes and head home. Had dinner and decided to head out. Next bar! We got in, and there was a table of drunk girls already. Like spilling drinks, yelling, dancing on tables drunk. Endless entertainment. This place played songs from who knows when. The "DJ" was well beyond the retirement age and looked like someone had just dragged him out of the retirement home for one last shot at his glorious youth. But still, alcohol does wonders and people still had a blast dancing to god knows what. A few hours went by and it was like 4/5 am and I had to get the fuck out. My flight was at 8 (yes I fucked up) and I needed to shower and pack. I've already forgone sleeping, the least I can do is be clean and not miss my flight home.
sunrise on my way to the airport..
